My work is grounded in a strengths based approach that recognizes every individual's unique abilities, resources, current opportunities, and future possibilities. At some point we are all confronted with opportunities to create meaning out of challenging and distressing life situations.
Much of my work, especially in the initial stages, involves helping clients to decrease the symptoms that are contributing to their distress, and to increase their ability to cope and function. Depending on your particular situation, I may utilize a blend of cognitive behavioural (CBT), dialectical behavioural (DBT), mindfulness, and/or eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapies.
Underlying all of these particular modalities lies the core of any positive therapeutic relationship, which is that the I as the counsellor am grounded in my clinical skills and orientation, and that you as the client feel safe, valued, respected and heard in order to facilitate the process of your own personal growth.
Symptom relief in itself is wonderful, and a very good place to start. But relief from distress doesn't answer deeper questions about who you are in the world and what you want your life to be about. Within the supportive therapeutic structure your values and beliefs are made conscious and you start to make life decisions out of this conscious awareness. The gift of therapy is an affirmation, an authentic "yes", to deeper and fuller experiencing of life.
